What's new at the Centre for Science and
Environment (CSE), New Delhi, IndiaCSE has picked
up cudgels against the Delhi transport minister, Parvez Hashmi, for once again attempting
to mislead the Supreme Court and the public about the merit of moving the buses to CNG as
directed by the Supreme Court. Hashmi has recently been quoted in the press talking about
"... blindly spending public money on an unproven (CNG) technology. We don't want
CNG...." While running out of time to meet the final deadline of March 31, 2001, the
transport minister appears to be desperate to find excuses for non-implementation of the
order, naturally to escape the likely chastisement from the bench when the matter comes up
for hearing close to the deadline. More so because the Delhi government has not yet given
an undertaking on the implementation of the order as asked by the Court orders on March
31, 2000. Read the caustic CSE press release at

FINGER LICKING GOOD
At last, a feast. A good story that focuses on the red jungle fowl, a full colonel chicken
and the mother of all hens. The fowl, a wondrous bird, originated in India and today feeds
a sizeable part of the world. It is now in danger of extinction and for obvious reasons.
Will the wild Red Jungle Fowl race into oblivion? A dish for bird lovers with a wide range
of information on various indigenous breeds that will vanish unless action is taken to
save them fast. A Down To Earth cover story at

PLASTIC (un)LIMITED
Pushing out the small recylcling units in the plastic industry may only fuel demand for
more and more virgin plastic. A sticky situation indeed. A distressing tale of how
industry plans to increase the sale of plastic, while pretending to lay down curbs on its
use. Down To Earth reports at

Agarwal:
US tastes cream paste
It is still
unclear who the new US president is. Even if he is favourably inclined towards the
protocol there is every chance of it getting rejected by the Senate |
