What's new at the Centre for Science and
Environment (CSE), New Delhi, IndiaCSE extends
warm greetings to its network of friends, colleagues and well-wishers on this first day of
                the new year.
CSE takes great pleasure in informing you that our Chairperson
Anil Agarwal has been selected for the prestigious Norman Borlaug Award for his
'crusading' work in creating environmental awareness in less developed countries. The
award instituted by Coromandel Fertilisers Limited since 1971, will be presented by
the President K.R. Narayanan on January 5th here in New Delhi. The President  will
also deliver his millenium address on 'Freedom from Hunger and Poverty' on the same
                occasion.

We are in the process of compiling a directory of experts who are
working on different aspects of air pollution. We believe this will build a network
of  experts who can lead and help the cause of People's Right to Clean Air. This will
be an easy reference guide and a who's who in the area of air pollution. The form for this
                directory is available at
                http://www.cseindia.org/html/extra/airlinks_form.htm
or you can write to vikas@cseindia.org  for the form.

                THE PIED-PIPER
Anti-US protests marked the climate talks 2000 at The Hague. The US was  literally
forced to eat humble pie -- hurled in the face of the US head of delegation, Frank Loy, by
a visibly annoyed British girl. The talks failed because the world refused to dance to the
tune set by the US. To find out why the South thinks the US was trying to grab more than
its fair share of the pie and all of that which was on Loy's face, read on.

                THE BLUE DANUBE WALTZ
While sand sometimes manages to retain its golden hue, the river can often become a dirty
dark brown. How does the water come back to life again? An article in Down To Earth about
how countries cleaned up two of the dirtiest rivers in Europe - the Danube and the Rhine.
It also provides a good chance to see how nations can get together to manage rivers and
                settle disputes.

                DIRTY DELHI
Politicians, industrialists, labour and the judiciary trade punches amid the encircling
gloom of pollution and dirty politics that has enveloped the capital of India. In the wake
of the Supreme Court ruling to relocate polluting units, Down To Earth documents the
knee-jerk reactions of an incompetent bureaucracy and also the tales of common people who
suffer due to the sorry state of governance.

                GLOBAL GREEN FARCE
Did someone say planting trees would save the planet? Chances are it won't. Global warming
is poised to be worse than earlier predicted and planting trees will not help stem the
tide, in this case rising sea levels, freaky weather phenomena and more greenhouse gases.

                A HERB THAT KILLS
Known for its medicinal qualities, Gloriosa superba, an herb found in Tamil Nadu, led to
thousands of farmers to cultivate it. But a shrinking market is driving them to commit
                suicide.
