What's new at the Centre for Science and
Environment (CSE), New Delhi, IndiaCentre for
Science and Environment is deeply disturbed by what now seems to be an organised whisper
campaign raging in the capital to scare people about CNG. "CNG causes cancer"
seems to be the buzzword amongst autorickshaw drivers. The Delhi government must
immediately issue public notices denying these rumours and inform people about the
environmental and health benefits of CNG. In the meantime, if the Delhi transport minister
Parvez Hashmi is asking for more time from the Supreme Court to implement the court order
then he must give a personal undertaking to implement the order. CSE Press release at
                http://www.cseindia.org/html/au/au4_20010112.htm

CSE organised a rapid survey to confirm if it was really true,
and  questioned about 207 autorickshaw drivers across the city in -- Hamdard Nagar,
Batra Hospital, Civil Lines, Mall Road, New Delhi Railway Station, ITO, ISBT, Delhi
University, GTB Nagar, and Connaught Place. See the results at

In 1999, CSE published the first issue of Water Links, a directory
of  individuals / organisations, engaged in activities related to water harvesting.
The directory was sold out in record time and we had an overwhelming demand for more. We
have now compiled an even more exhaustive new edition of water links. This directory
covers information about 700 individuals and organisations from India and overseas. We
hope that this directory will assist groups and individuals who are interested in the
subject to network, dialogue and strengthen their capacities and capabilities of water
harvesting. For more information and an online order form, go to

                Small wonder
Chaos and political greed marked the birth of the three states of  Chhattisgarh,
Jharkhand and Uttaranchal. All these states have one thing in common. They are endowed
with lush green forests and mineral wealth and abundant water. Will their political
leadership try to base development on the plunder of these resources? A Down To Earth

                Crane curry
Here is a recipe for disaster. Take one crane, a gun, some onions a lot of garlic and a
complete disregard for wildlife protection norms. The right masala for cutting short the
flight of rare migratory cranes from their frozen homelands to the wetlands of the Indian
subcontinent. Read all about it at ...

                Too hot to
                handle
The global community has finally realised that it is time to play safe  and stay away
from deadly pesticides. An international treaty is on the anvil, but some countries still
want to use DDT. What a waste...

                Water of India
We took water for granted. At one time it was everywhere. Clean, fresh and sparkling. Now
the Supreme Court tells us that clean drinking water is a fundamental right. An amazing
                story...
