What's new at the Centre for Science and
Environment (CSE), New Delhi, IndiaPREPARING
YOU TO CHANGE THE FUTURE
Nine years in the making. A few days to read. A lifetime of valuable knowledge. Down To
Earth recently completed its 200th issue and to mark the occasion we put together an
edition about the state of sustainable development, environment and science as reported by
Down To Earth since June 1992. This cross-linked 240-page volume is a primer on
environment, a historical record of the crises we have faced and a reference volume on the
most important issues all rolled into one. Available now - Order online at:

CHILDREN OF ENDOSULFAN
A Kerala village is a classic example of the government's callous attitude and
indifference towards its citizens. Research done by Centre for Science and Environment
indicates that the residents of Padre village are afflicted by several unusual diseases
because of spraying of endosulfan pesticide by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala. Each
resident of Padre, whose blood sample was tested, has endosulfan residues several hundred
times the residue limit for water.

REPUBLIC QUAKED
The Gujarat tragedy took place while the government and the Indian scientific community
remained oblivious to the obvious danger of earthquakes. A Down To Earth analysis also
answers a lot of unasked questions -- why earthquakes occur, how their impacts can be
minimised, and more.

THE SINKING DEBATE
What is the science behind the sinks issue? An analysis about how climate change talks
have come to a halt over the debate on sinks and how a group of industrialised countries
are using them to get concessions for meeting their Kyoto Protocol commitments.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY
Human beings are killing the most playful and beguiling mammals of water. Awareness
programmes can play a vital role in saving dolphins that are on the brink of extinction
all over the world.

SCIENCE
