            FOREST FURY
Naxalism started as a movement against land alienation. Today it has become a popular
movement against natural resource alienation, particularly forests. Large areas of densely
forested regions in the country are controlled by Naxalites. In these forested areas, the
state and forest administration dare not enter. Naxalites use the growing alienation of
tribal people against forest laws to gain ground. They secure tribal rights over non- t
imber forest produce and dispense quick justice - at gun point. Sadly, the victims of
Naxal violence are invariably the custodians of our forests - forest guards. What is even
more unfortunate is that they lose their live s defending laws that are so anti-people.
Down To Earth reporters travel to these densely forested areas to discover what the Naxal
rule means for forest management. More at

            FACT OR FICTION
The status of cancer data in India is as scary as the killer itself. The most recent data
on cancer by the Indian Council of Medical Research is 13 years old. With little data on
hand, battling cancer has become doubly di fficult. Details at

JAILBIRDS MAKE BUCK OUT OF MUCK
The Tihar jail exemplifies how efficient waste management not only makes our surroundings
clean, but also endows us with economic benefits. What is required is a little bit of
conviction and hard work. For details click

            BARRICADES
Burgeoning population and agricultural encroachment in the last half century have erected
artificial walls within the Gond tribes. These ethnic groups, dominating the Bastar
district, have little social economic interchan ge today. More at
