CELEBRATING
TEN YEARS OF DOWN TO EARTH
Down To Earth (DTE) completes an incredible decade in the history of sustainable
development this month. Since its first issue released in May 1992, the science and
environment fortnightly has been serving its purpose of informing and inspiring the
masses, and environmental activists, about the environmental threats that modern India
faces. We celebrated the spirit of the ten years of toil and hard work by giving a new
look to the magazine and launching its online edition(www.downtoearth.org.in) on 16 May
2002. Gobar times, a DTE supplement for kids, also gets a brand new look for its print and
online editions (www.gobartimes.org). For our products and publications we now have an
online store where you can buy Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) publications
(http://csestore.cse.org.in), yet another addition to our network of websites. Check them

Latest issue of May 31st 2002 is

SOUTH ASIAN JOURNALISTS
WORKSHOP ON GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE
If you are a journalist interested in
knowing more about, and reporting on, the global politics of the environment, you could be
an ideal candidate for the two-day South Asian Journalists Workshop on Global
Environmental Governance being organised by the CSE in July 2002, in New Delhi. The
workshop presents an ideal opportunity for South Asian journalists to learn about, and
discuss, global environmental politics with speakers from around the world.

ENVIRONMENTAL MEANING OF POVERTY
Which districts in India are the poorest and why? Down To Earth (DTE) analyses the surfeit
of data and information to bring forth the underlying reality of the 10 poorest districts
in India -- environmental degradation. How has neglecting the natural resource base of the
country put the rural economy in disarray? DTE reporters travel to find impoverished
residents of these districts living the answer everyday. Surveying the poverty of thought
in Indias governance.

SENTINELS OF SOUND
A clutch of conscientious citizens across India have collectively clamoured and crusaded
against the decibel din. Their struggle has been strenuous in the face of official apathy
and lax law enforcement against increasing noise levels.
