6 Mining Industry Freeport McMoran (US) Sri Lanka National Science Academy says that there will be severe disturbances to the sensitive ecosystem of the area through the Eppawala Apatite mine.
7 Mining Industry Freeport McMoran (US) Indonesia The company won praise for setting aside 1% of revenues- roughly $15m last year- for community programmes targeted at indigenous tribe, and spending a similar sum on health and education, but only after much conflict with the locals.
8 Mining Industry Stillwater Mining Co. (US) Montana It plans to discharge the mine water directly into East Boulder river. Local environmentalists are pressurising the Department of environmental quality to require treatment of the mine water, before it is released into the river.
9 Oil/ Gas Industry Gujarat Gas Company (Sub. of British Gas PLC) Gujarat The Gujarat Pollution Control Board has issued notice to it, accusing it guilty of the leakage of ethyl mercaptan, that has been hovering over the Surat air for some weeks. The gas had been causing breathlessness and irritating eyes of the people.
10 Oil/ Gas Industry Royal Dutch/ Shell (Netherlands) Argentina It aims to obtain environmental credits on greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean development mechanisms established by the Kyoto Protocol for the 24,000 hectares of plantations, installed by it in Buenos Aires.
11 Paper & Pulp Industry Century Mill (India) Kumaon

The management says that the mill is equipped with effluent treatment and air pollution control prevention devices. But people in its vicinity complain of respiratory diseases, thus indicating polluted air. There is also depletion in the no. of birds.

Recent study authored by eight scientists from Univ. of Calicut & IGCAR, Kalpakkam has established the presence of unusually high concentration of toxic heavy metals in Chaliyar river.
13 Paper & Pulp Industry Indorayon (Indonesia) Indonesia Investors fears about Indorayon, an Indonesian pulp and rayon mill, intensified following a remark by the Indonesian environment minister, that its main factory had polluted the environment and would have to move or close.
14 Power Industry Mysore Powergen (India) & Ansaldo Energia (Italy) Mysore (Karnataka) The 1000 mw thermal power project needs 1.3 tmc per annum of water which is to be released from the Kabini river. However, this requires the clearance of all the Cauvery basin states in the south, which the promoters did not receive.
15 Power Industry Smith Cogeneration (US) Mangalore Has decided to relocate, the 800 crore barge mounted power project in Karnataka, after encountering environmental problems.
16 Sportgoods Industry Nike Inc. (US) Australia The world's largest maker of athletic shoes says it will purge its products of the widely used polyvinyl chloride which is a threat to humans and the environment.

 

17 Industry Associations ASSOCHAM (India) West Bengal Has undertaken a project on air pollution control in the cement industry located at West Bengal. Has an MoU with World environment center, for sharing expertise on the subject.

Construction Industry DLF Universal (India) Bangalore Supreme Court (India) The Karnataka govt., would approach apex court seeking the review of its recent order restoring permission to a township proposed by DLF on the bank of Tippagondanahally reservoir.
Mining Industry Kudramukh Iron Ore Co. (India) Bangalore (Karnataka) Karnataka High Court PIL had been filed in the Karnataka High Court accusing it of forest encroachments. But the company denies these charges and is confident that the court would dismiss the plea.
Oil/ Gas Industry Reliance Petroleum (India) Jamnagar (Gujarat) Gujarat High Court & Supreme Court The decision to lay oil pipeline through marine national park gave rise to a lot of controversies. A PIL was filed in Gujarat High Court, and later on the matter was referred to the Supreme Court resulting in the issuance of notions to the company.
Oil/ Gas Industry Texaco (US) Amazon US Federal Courts Ecuadorian govt. informed US Federal Court in New York, that it may no longer be held responsible for the damages from 25 years of oil drilling operations in the Amazon.

Chemical Industry Orica (Australia) Homebush Bay Greenpeace exposed and safely removed toxic waste produced by Orica from Homebush bay. It is one of the 5 most polluted waterways in the world and 2nd highest for pollution by phthalates.
Fertilizer Industry Haifa Chemicals (Israel) Mediterranean Sea The toxic sludge produced by it was regularly dumped into the Mediterranean sea by the ship (Skandia) owned by Danish company (Nordic Stone & Gravel). Greenpeace intervened and was successful in stopping this illegal operation.
Mining Industry Ecuanor (Norway) Gala River (Ecuador) The indigenous communities fear that the company's gold mining project will destroy Gala river, their only source of drinking water. It is the only river in the area, which has not been polluted so far by the mining industry.
Paper & Pulp Industry Sinar Mas Pulp & Paper (Indonesia) Bhima River (Pune) Had been releasing effluents into the Bhima river without proper treatment. Therefore it was issued a showcause notice by the pollution control board.
Power Industry General Atomics (US) Nakhon Nayok River (Thailand) It was awarded a contract to build 10MW nuclear reactor in Thailand. But fears have been expressed by local villagers that Nakhon Nayok river would be contaminated by the nuclear wastes.
