Contributions are invited to support the livelihood activities of those affected by the 26th January 2001 earthquake in Gujarat, India that has seen the loss of an estimated 50 000 lives and severe damage to buildings.

Established in response to the 1998 cyclone in Gujarat, The Disaster Mitigation Institute's (DMI) Livelihood Relief Fund assists in livelihood recovery for vulnerable groups affected by disaster.

The Fund has financed livelihood tools for cyclone victims that integrate disaster mitigation with micro-finance and activities that promote and protect the livelihood of rural poor women during the 2000 drought in Gujarat. More recently, in partnership with a national body of artisans - the Fund was utilized to revive destroyed market lines.

The Fund seeks advice from an independent chartered accounting firm and has received 80G certificate of the Income Tax Act, 1961 for 50% tax deductible from the Commissioner of Income Tax, Government of India.

Currently, DMI's field team is in Bhuj and the affected villages of Kutch and Surendranagar districts to assess the damage, asset loss and the type of relief that is being received. The long term needs of earthquake victims include livelihood relief and DMI seeks to extend its current Livelihood Relief Fund to support this need.
