November 8: The Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata, has selected Sunita Narain, director, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), for the Dr B C Deb Memorial Award for Popularisation of Science. The award is in recognition of the unwavering work done by CSE and Down To Earth in the fields of science, development and sustainability. "I am really honoured to receive this prestigious award and would like to see it as an acknowledgement of the work done by my colleague Anil Agarwal, and others at Down To Earth," Sunita Narain said. "I think this is a very big acknowledgement, particularly from the science community." The annual award, initiated in 1994-95, is presented to an Indian national who has contributed to the popularisation and development of science.
