If you love machines, ships and the sea, this is the career for you. Marine Engineers are responsible for the safe running of all engines, boilers, refrigerating and sanitary equipments, deck machinery and steam connection of ships, and the maintainance, repair and construction of all marine machinery. This also includes the supervision of the engine crew involved in operating machines and checking for smooth functioning of all steam engines, electric motors, propulsive engines, etc. They can also work as shore engineers.

Studies required

Besides a degree in marine or naval engineering, one can do four and five year diploma courses or do a short term diploma course after an engineering degree in any other field. A BSC course in nautical science can join the merchant navy as navigating officer after obtaining a certificate of competence. Competancy exams are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through Directorate General of Shipping, mumbai.

Employment Scene

The commonest way to start your career is to join as Junior Engineer Officer on merchant navy ships belonging to private and public sector shipping companies. A marine engineer can also take up employment in different foreign and Indian shipping companies, and with the port and harbour departments for design and research activities.

Money and pay scale
In the private sector, most engineers start with Rs 8000 to Rs 12,000 per month. with allowances. Those who also have a management can get Rs14,000 to Rs 50,000.
In public sectors, most engineers start with Rs 5000 to 8000 along with allowance. On confirmation, this increases to Rs 9000 to 12,000 per month. The salary for subordinate engineers ranges from Rs 6,500 to Rs12,500 per month. On confirmation it rises toRs.10,000 to 11,000. Executive engineers draw a salary of Rs10,500 to 11,500 per month. Superintendent engineers draw salary of Rs 14,300 to18, 300 per month while chief engineers draw a salary in the range of Rs 22,400 to Rs 26,000 plus allowances.
