Rainwater
harvesting
Rainwater harvesting model projects
CSE has initiated a campaign to spread awareness about community-based
rainwater harvesting (RWH) techniques by setting up several model
projects in Delhi. One can observe working models of rainwater harvesting
at these sites. If you are keen to catch water where it falls - start
here...
Here's what the hosts of CSE's model projects have to say...
"No
one knew what rainwater harvesting was all about when we decided to
take it up in our college. As the work began the students grew curious
and wanted to know more about it. Now everyone wants to adopt it."
- Aruna Ludra, lecturer (retired), English department, Janaki Devi
Memorial College
"We
took up rainwater harvesting when we realised that this was the
only way to avert a crippling water shortage in future. The enthusiasm
shown by the children was our driving force. Now we all feel that
we have been able to make a significant change and it's a great
feeling."
- Madhu Bhatnagar, deputy head, The Shri Ram School

Air
pollution
Is your school or college close to a busy road? Have you observed
a rise in the number of students suffering from breathing problems?
If so, it's time to call up CSE's Pollution Monitoring Lab.
Environment education and the pollution monitoring lab
Experts from CSE's pollution monitoring lab conduct air quality monitoring
on request in various educational institutes. A major objective of
this study is to understand the quality of air which vulnerable school
children breathe for six to eight hours every day.
All air quality monitoring studies are conducted by using the Respirable
Dust Sampler (RDS) for checking the levels of Suspended Particulate
Matter (SPM), Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM), Nitrogen
dioxide (NO2) and Sulphur dioxide (SO2).
Such studies are aimed at creating awareness among schoolchildren
about air pollution and its hazardous effects. These studies also
help sensitise children about pollution control measures. The air
pollution awareness programmes are conducted in a lively and interactive
manner during the eight-hour long monitoring process.
Institutions in Delhi where air pollution monitoring studies have
been conducted:
Gyan Bharti School (Saket), Dewan Public School (Sangam Vihar), Shri
Ram School (Vasant Vihar), Shri Ram School (Gurgaon), Blue Bells School,
Modern School (Barakhamba Road), Mother's International School, St
Paul's School, Manavsthali School (Rajinder Nagar), British School
(Chanakyapuri), Cambridge School (Srinivaspuri), St Mary's School
(Safdarjung Enclave), Delhi Police Public School (Safdarjung Enclave),
Delhi Public School (Vasant Kunj) and Maitreyi College (Chanakyapuri).
This initiative has been well received, and many schools have asked
the Lab to continue to moinitor air quality in the area. Often, special
lectures are organised in addition to the air quality monitoring in
schools. Data generated from these studies are posted on the CSE
website. The website also displays Delhi's air quality index.
