DEAR CHIEF MINISTER, DARINGTO GO BEHIND BARS BY DEFYING CNG ORDERS WON'T HELP
Centre for Science and Environment is shocked at the callous attitude of
the chief minister Sheila Dikshit towards controlling severe air pollution problem in
Delhi. Her attitude towards the Supreme Court orders on clean fuels only betrays her
desperation to pass on the blame

DEAR MR. HASHMI. IF YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT IMPLEMENTING THE CND ORDER, WHY NOT MAKE AN
HONEST SUBMISSION AND STOP PLAYING GAMES
Centre for Science and Environment is incensed at the recent
announcement from the Delhi transport minister Parvez Hashmi that the new CNG bus
operators would not be allowed to ply as state carriage buses but only on a limited scale
as contract carriage buses. The banality of official argument is astoundingOct. 11, 2001
YET ANOTHER CNG BUS BLOWS UP IN THE CAPITAL AND BOTH THE DELHI AND THE CONCERNED CENTRAL
MINISTRIES REMAIN QUIET
Centre for Science and Environment is shocked at the recent incidents of
bus fires - consecutively four episodes within a short span of three months, and the
silent government. Obsessed only with the desire to discredit CNG technology the official
agencies forgot to do their own bit

CSE DENOUNCES BJP NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT MADAN LAL KHURANA
For trying to cover up for the dismal track record and incompetence of
his party, ruling at the Centre, in implementing the Supreme Courts order on CNG. He
is misleading both transporters and public alike by demanding status quo

CSE HAS CRITICISED THE MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS FOR ITS PROPOSED AMENDMENTS
Yet another incident of fire in a CNG station. Are you surprised that
CNG vehicles catch fire or experience gas leaks? You should not be because no safety rules
or inspection mechanisms are in place even though there are thousands of CNG vehicles on
Delhi roads

to slap higher taxes on CNG and making it more expensive

UNION MINISTER FOR PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS, TAKES AN OBSTRUCTIONIST STANCE
Due to the obstructionist stance taken by the Union ministry for
petroleum and natural gas, Indraprastha Gas Ltd has failed miserably to meet the target of
setting up all the 80 CNG stations mandated by the Supreme Court, and has also slipped up
in meeting its commitment to convert all the daughter stations to `daughter-booster'
stations by August, 2001, to maintain uniform pressure to lower the filling time. The long
queues in the Capital are a testimony to this. And unless the Ministry pulls up its socks
they could last a long time

RAM NAIK, UNION PETROLEUM MINISTER, IS OUT TO SABOTAGE THE SUPREME COURT'S ORDERS ON CNG
Just as the deadline for converting all public passenger transport to
CNG by September 30, 2001, is coming closer, for once everyone else is turning around to
implement the Supreme Court order, but the Union minister for petroleum and natural gas,
Ram Naik, in charge of gas supply in the country, is not interested in dealing with long
queues for CNG by augmenting its supply

Even though traffic congestion and bad air today marks almost every Indian city and town,
today, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha has presented a budget which will make Indian
people regret the day it was presented to the Parliament said the Centre for Science and

ARE YOU THERE, MR. BAALU? IT'S YOUR TURN NOW
For the first time in the history of the emission standards setting
process a major step forward has been catalysed by a public campaign with no thanks to the
environment ministry. While the automobile industry has come forward to take
responsibility for the emission performance of the vehicles on road in the face of a
strong NGO demand, the ministry of environment and forests is still sleeping. May be
people can do without the ministry of environment and forests or for that matter the
ministry of surface transport, supposedly in charge of regulating vehicular emissions in
the country

GOVERNMENT CORPORATION'S CREATION

laboratory analysis on samples brought from Padre village of Enmakaje Gram Panchayat in
Kasaragod district, Kerala, where a lot of unusual diseases related to the central nervous
system have been reported, especially among children. The first tests conducted on the
level of pesticide contamination in the village showed that extremely high levels of the
organochlorine pesticide endosulfan were present in all the samples, from human blood and
milk, to soil, water, fruits vegetables, cows milk and skin tissue, fish and frog

Centre for Science and Environment is deeply disturbed by what now seems to be an
organised whisper campaign raging in the capital to scare people about CNG. "CNG
causes cancer" is the buzz-word whenever you decide to probe while riding a CNG auto.
This will have to be culled outright as this is the most significant step taken so far to
control killer particles in the city. The Delhi government must immediately issue public
notices denying these rumours and inform people about the environmental and health
benefits of CNG. In the meantime, if the Delhi transport minister Parvez Hashmi is asking
for more time from the Supreme Court to implement the court order then he must give a
personal undertaking to implement the order
