Anil, like many of us in the environment movement after Stockholm, where I had a
particularly bruising fight over NGO presence, I was not clear about the way ahead. I had
a conviction that public engagement with environmental affairs was essential but for long
after the 1973 oil crisis environment was a dirty word. A glimmer of light on my horizon
was what you were doing. That first Citizens Report on the Indian Environment was
a fantastic achievement. You hadnt gone scratching for money from Ford, or Moscow or
anywhere. It was vivid pragmatism which -- said we dont believe anybody, we
dont know what to do, but lets all seek the fact that the citizen can see and then
discuss what to do. It was science-based not ideology-based and yet it was firmly
pro-India and pro-poor. It just changed the ground rules. I was friendly with people at
the World Bank at the time and inside the Bank, where there were little groups of
environment people who didnt stick their necks out, people suddenly found the
courage to say "Hey guys look at this". You had political legitimacy because you
just went to Mrs.Gandhi and were received as a serious voice. I know that it was
politically adroit to achieve that. And you gathered people of like mind.
The more I saw of you the more I felt hugely encouraged. If You could gather strength
in India why could not other people do likewise elsewhere? What you had to say hung
together and your campaigns were practical. My remnant of faith was, and is that if you
give people ammunition to campaign, to write speeches, articles, books, to see how a TV
programme can work then you are watering the seeds of citizen action. You can get the
media to cooperate the ultimate story is good"must we all really wreck all of
the planet"?
I Shall not bang on except to say that your existence is important in itself as a
navigation mark. For the third World yes, but for the rich West as well. Instead of a pack
of angry people blaming capitalism or debt or colonialism (which rhetoric is not actually
effective unless it has the luck to co-opt forces in some rich countries) one has the
impression that there are citizen forces realistic, with their own constituencies.
Somebody to do business with. Like CSE and its constituency.

I have received the distressing news of the passing away of
Dr. Anil Agarwal, your beloved Director.
He has been an Example in the struggle for survival in the present world where the lack of
justice, the lack of equity and solidarity, and the lack of love for our neighbour and for
life itself, increases everyday.
Please share my condolences for this terrible loss with
Anil's own family, and with the rest of the wonderful CSE family.
I pray to our Lord to give Anil the Peace that he so much deserved.

Dar Sunita,
I feel really sad to hear the news about Anil's demise. I still remember his first
vigorous attempts to fight the disease when he came to Paris to the hospital back in 1994
(or 95).
Anil has been a great visionary for all of us trying to contribute to a better environment
in India or elsewhere. There may different ways to respond to a given problem, but there
surely is only one mean to do so: by showing the kind of determination, tirelessness and
intelligence he did. He surely was a role model for many. Since I know you shared
important parts of his life, and the last time I met him was with you, at your family's
home, please accept my sincere condoleances.
Warm regards,

Dear Sir,
It is with deep sense of shock that I have learnt about the sad and sudden demise of Shri
Anil Agarwal, a world level environmental expert, whose efforts in the field of
environment will always be remembered. Destiny has cut short drastically life of a person
who would have made further contributions for the health of every one of us by focusing on
the important aspects of environment. I have been in touch with him from 1993 and I thank
him very much for the support given by him to me by including my name as a resource person
for the Centre for Science and Environment. During 1995 and 2000, three book revie4ws
written
by me have been published in Down to Earth. I wish that the work initiated by him is
continued and carried forward in right earnest, being important for the mankind. In this
hour of grief, I offer my condolences to the bereaved family and pray to God to give
strength to the family and also the Centre for Science and Environment to bear this loss
and that the departed soul may rest in peace.
Thanking you,

Dear Sunita,
The news of Anil's untimely death has shocked me.It was one of the saddest news that I
have heard in my life. Tough he was ailing for quite long, I never expected such untimely
demise. I thought, he would still guide the environmental movements for quite some time.
Undoubtedly, in my opinion Anil was number one environmentalist of our country and among
the top most world over. I have never seen a more committed, more dedicated, more
passionate and more forceful environmentalist than Anil. As long as environmental issues
remain unresolved and as long as environmental problems continue, this nation will always
remember Anil. His passing away has created a vacuum which would be extremely difficult to
fill in. My institution and personally myself have lost a great friend and supporter. My
entire staff joins me in sending our deepest condolences to his family and all of you in
CSE. It is now the responsibility of you and many others in CSE to continue and strengthen
Anil's work. I assure my support to you and CSE in continuing Anil's incomplete work. May
his soul rest in peace.

Dear Sunita,
Words......they suddenly seem the most clumsy thing ever invented...I am so shocked,
stunned and so sorry to hear this tragic news. This is a staggering and unbearably painful
loss for you - so many of us feel it very deeply too. My heart, many hearts, go out to
you, hoping to bear you up at this time, to give you courage and try to share and shoulder
at least some small part of your grief. We grieve too. Many of us loved and admired Anil
too, we will continue to do so. We will support you in whatever ways we can, in efforts to
ensure that the immense works, his struggles and victories in this life - remain alive,
andcontinue to bear fruit. What he has very ably and comprehensively begun will continue
to expose and undo the ways of those who rape, plunder and despoil this planet.
The earth has lost one of her greatest sons, but his spirit will continue to energise and
inspire us.

On January 3,2001, in Chandigarh
This meeting of concerned citizens, social activists, environmentalists, educationists and
officials are deeply grieved to know of the sudden and untimely passing away of Shri Anil
Agarwal ji. His contribution especially in the field of Science and Environment has been a
pioneering work and would continue to be a beacon light in the future too. The

My dear Madam,
It was with deep regret that I read in today's Hindu regarding Anil's demise. We all know
he was fighting a cancer but the vigour of his writing, his sharp and analytical mind and
the pace he set gave little indication that the battle was being lost. May God bless his
soul.
We know that India has lost its foremost and most fearless crusader against environmental
degradation. We know it is going to be difficult to his high standards but we also want
you to know that we are with you in your hour of need.

Dear Ms. Narain,
The sad demise of Shri Anil Agarwal is a great loss to the country. His was among the
sanest and strongest voices heard with respect on environmental issues. As you have
rightly said, this struggle has to be carried forward. In my own way, I have been helping
the Centre for Science and Environment, especially the Down to Earth in improving the
quality of the Health and Medicine section. Due to some unfortunate misunderstanding
created by one of the senior members of staff, my association with the magazine has in
recent times become minimal. If my services are needed in any form, kindly feel free to
contact me. Down to Earth is the flagship of CSE and should remain so, as one of the

Dear Madam,
I could know about the sudden and untimely demise of our beloved Environmentalist Shri
Anil Agarwal sahab. He has been a down to earth man in true spirit. He was always ready to
hear others views and gave time to all, without any partiality to express their views in
seminars, which were organised by CSE. He was very sharp and one of his very good quality
was, he used to remember each and every body's name in no time.
The country has lost a person, who stood for a cause with the farmers and poor who
believed in preserving the nature in true spirit; a person who could represent their views
to the top politicians, planners and decision makers of our country in a justifying way to
get their help.
Convey my deep condolences to his family members. I pray God for the peace of his soul and
strength to his family and CSE to bear the loss. It would have been his last wish to carry

I was saddened to read about the passing
away, in Dehra Dun on January 2, of Mr Anil Agarwal. As a news report [by Anand
Parthasarathy] in 'The Hindu' two days later rightly stated, Mr Agarwal was recognised the
world over as "the authentic voice of the informed and concerned environmental
movement' in India. It is a great pity that he finally lost the battle against a dread
disease which he fought so bravely for a decade.
I came to know of Mr Agarwal [and the work of the Society for Environmental
Communications] mainly through his writings in Down To Earth, of which I have been a
regular reader for several years. Mr Agarwal was always outspoken in advocating the causes
he fervently believed in, and was not afraid to call a spade a spade. CSE and Down To
Earth have played a catalytic role in educating the people on environmental issues, which
have assumed even greater importance in the last few years. I am sure that CSE, with its
dedicated rteam of environmental activists, will continue the pioneering work of Mr
Agarwal. This will indeed be a fitting tribute to one who made environment a matter of
national concern.

Dear Sunita,
I was extremely sad to hear of Anil's passing. Anil and his work have long been an
inspiration for me, and I will not forget his warmth toward me, a young and raw

work and inspiring effect will live on, and has fundamentally shaped the landscape of
environmental politics in India and the world. My deep condolences to you personally, and
to the staff of CSE. I imagine Anil's passing on has left a deep void personally and
professionally, and my thoughts go out to you all in this difficult time.

Dear Sunita,
I was just informed about my friend Anils demise and I want to convey my deepest sorrow
and condolences to Anil's family and to you. The last time when I met him in Stockholm
Anil seemed very weak and it is sad to hear that he finally had to give up his struggle.
During my time in Delhi I did not only get to know Anil at the working level as the
brightest and most stimulating contact in the field of environment, I also came to know
him as a good friend. Although, we didn't meet so much in recent years, I will clearly
feel the deep emptiness in the world without him.
Particularly in India, Anils demise is a great loss for the environmental movement. It
will not be easy to fill his place. For CSE this time is crucial. The task of bringing
forward the legacy of Anils work and his personality is immense. I wish you every success
in that work.

Dear Sunita,
I'm very much shocked to hear the news about the sad and sudden demise of Mr Anil
Aggarwal. Though I have never met him, I felt his presence by interacting with
CSE and Down to Earth. Anil has been the stalwart in the environmental movement in India.
His tragic demise has left a void in this movement that cannot be filled.
My depest condolence to the CSE family and especially Down to Earth. I hope CSE will be
able to pursue the movement of its Chairman with same enthusiasm and clarity.
Yours

Dear CSE Team
From my IIT friends and newspaper reports I have been shocked to know about the sad and
sudden demise of my friend Anil Agarwal. Both of us being IITs alumni and he being earlier
the President of IIT Kanpur Alumni Association and myself President of IIT Delhi Alumni
Association, we were in regular touch with each other. In fact he had so kindly agreed to
be also associated as distinguished visiting faculty with our Aravali
Institute of Management (AIM).
Anil was a great crusader, environmentalist par excellence, working for a noble cause. He
would surely be missed by all his friends and also all those who truly believe in the
nation-building and welfare of the humanity at large. It is a void which will be difficult
to fill. However, I am sure you all will take the work so paintstakingly started by Anil
forward which alone can be the best tribute to him. Please feel free to let me know if we
can be of any help in your endeavours.
On behalf of all the students, staff and faculty of AIM I send to you and Anil's family
our heart-felt condolences. May the Almighty give courage and fortitute to all to bear
this irreparable loss.
Thanks and best regards

Dear Ms. Sunita Narain,
I am shocked to hear that our respected environmentalist Anil Agawal is dead.I am sure
that it is a great loss - not only for Indian NGOs but all environmental scientists
throughout the world.
Please convey my empathetic feeling to all your co-workers/-editors and other staff.
I would be very greatful if you, resp. your staff, could send me Agarwal's bio-data and
some other materials on him for an obituary.
The German journal "epd-Entwicklungspolitik" has asked me to write an obituary.
It would be a great help, if you could send me the materials by e-mail.
Thanking you.
Best wishes,

Dear Sunita
Friends at CSE.
I always felt that Anil would not yield to his cancer, that he would frustrate its design,
that he would emerge triumphant, that he would shame his disease. How can some one like
Anil yield the ground or die?
It there ever was a gusty flighter against a deadly disease and for larger societal
causes, Anil was the one. Thirty years that I am in this field I have seen no one make
such durable, such sustainable contribution. What pains one is the thought what it would
have been had he enjoyed normal health and a normal tenure in this world.
Why is the destiny so cruel? Why should such a person be given such a harsh punishment and
why should this country, in a desperate need for a visionary, fighter and a crusader, be
deprived of Anil's inspirational leadership? It may sound an overstatement, but on hearing
the news I felt that with Anils death the sector is orphaned. India is big and its people
are versatile. But Anil's are rare- very very rare.
It is sad that Anil is no longer here. But he has left an institution and a legacy behind.
All of you at CSE have a huge responsibility. I wish you strength to overcome this
irrepairable loss and to continue the great work he started. There is so much to do. We
know you are equipped. His spirit will always be with you and with all those who care for
the environment.
We pray for his peace. We pray for strength to you all.
In solidarity

Anil Agarwal, visionary founder and leader of the Centre for Science and Environment

has not only lost a rare thinker and advocate dedicated to improving the environment, but
also a staunch supporter of the rights of the poor, and of social justice.
There will be a condolence meeting at the Press Club today (January 5th) at 4pm.

Dear Sunitaji,
With great shock and grief I learnt the sad demise of Anilji after I came back to Lucknow
on January 4. His death came to me as a rude shock when I was trying to come to terms
following passing away of my father on December 19 at our native place following cardiac
arrest.
It was a privilege for me to work with Anilji and you as Lucknow based correspondent of
Down To Earth in 1993 and early part of 1994. I still remember those days and treat them
as the best in my life.
My humble homage to Anilji. May his soul rest in peace.

To everyone at CSE from all of us at Anokhi, We are
all really saddened to hear of Anil having left us. We have all watched him put in
enormous amounts of energy for years on end for causes that have and will continue to
benefit us all. Environment Came to figure in our lives primarily because of the issues
that Anil took up, prior to his total commitment to the cause - these issues did not
really figure or matter. India and in fact the world owes so much to him. I can not
imagine another Anil - will we ever have one like him?Of course not. But instead to
ensured the survival of the cause through an institution - CSE - and the world is richer
for it. Very saddened at the loss
