AIMS
Programmes
in environmental awareness in USA
CSE, USA is proposing to
undertake programmes of
environmental awareness in the
United States, specifically with
Southern perspectives, to create
a better understanding amongst
the citizens of the US about
crucial linkages between
environment and development. The
Centre will also put forward
positions on global environmental
governance, initiate debates on
models of participatory
environmental management and on
economic mechanisms to improve
environmental management. Given the threat to the
natural systems of the world, and
the development of environmental
treaties as a response to this
crisis, the Centre for Science
and Environment in Washington, DC
hopes to play a unique role in
highlighting and creating an
understanding of the needs of
developing countries to
incorporate them into ongoing
negotiations.
Developing
countries are still in the
process of evolving appropriate
solutions to handle their
environmental problems. They need
to be informed accurately and
speedily about latest
developments in relevant areas in
the West so that their responses
can benefit from the lessons
learnt in the West. The Centre
will play the role of an
information facilitator enabling
information flows to the
developed world from the Third
World and vice-versa.
Long Term
Objectives
1. To work
towards a global consensus on
environmental issues through
policy
research;
commissioning papers on issues
such as climate change,
biotechnology,
international trade, etc.;
2. Inform and
create an understanding amongst
the US public about global
environmental
issues and their interface with
economic development by
dissemination
of information through
newsletters, books, periodicals,
exhibitions;
3. Interact
with and educate the US public on
Southern perspectives on global
environmental
issues by conducting briefing
workshops, training seminars etc.
To facilitate
interaction with US
non-governmental organisations
and the public, a new
organisation called the Centre
for Science and Environment, has
been registered in Washington,
DC. This organisation will
undertake all environmental
awareness activities that are
listed in the proposal.
