THE GOLDEN ROOT
Herbs: vital for the Indian system of medicine, used in the treatment of cancer. A great
deal of research is being conducted on some of them. But they are being plundered by
unscruplous traders while indifferent officials turn a blind eye to a multi-crore
rupee trade. Rare Indian medicinal plants are in danger as herb smuggling is assuming
alarming proportions in the country. A Down To Earth analysis at

a saree unit situated next to his house deprives him of his right to live and breathe
clean air. But the system is loaded against him and his pleas fall on deaf ears. Read more

EXHAUSTIVE MEASURES
Tax what goes into the car to come out of the tailpipe and it may work wonders. The
European experience shows us that taxes are effective in controlling vehicular
emissions - they edge out dirty fuels. Dirtier the fuel, higher the tax threat.
Dirty engines also attract tax. The result: these products become unattractive in the
market. But the Government of India is still to wake up to such measures. It cannot be a
taxing thought for the finance minister, can it?
