The Green Schools Programme envisages self-assessment of the
environmental practices of the school by its students using the Green
Schools Manual.
The Manual includes interesting exploratory activities, whereby students go around the
school and collect information about the use and management of resources i.e. water, waste
etc. The process of collection and interpretation of the information/data, aids learning
of key environmental issues. The students rate the school and give marks on the basis of
the survey/audit.
The result is a 'report card' of the school prepared by its own students regarding
environmental practices. And instead of subjects like Maths and History, the subjects are
Water Air etc.
 |
Water: Make your
school water literate and teach ways of doing rainwater harvesting and reducing water
waste |
 |
Air: Students check out the transport
system of the school and understand how people commute to the school, which help schools
understand how their transport policies affect air quality and find ways of reducing their
emissions |
 |
Land: The different plant and animal
species on the school campus are identified by the students and a survey done on the use
of pesticides in the school. |
 |
Energy: The students study electricity
and other forms of energy consumption on the school campus and explore ways in which it
can be minimized. |
 |
Waste: Students find out how much and
what type of waste the school is producing? Learn composting and waste segregation methods
in the process. |
The purpose of the programme is that schools can make use
of this manual in their environmental studies programme or as an activity in the eco-
clubs. The data that is collected by students, working with their teachers, can then be
compiled so that schools have a self- assessment of their environmental practices. The aim
of this rating is, in particular, to understand what can be done to improve the schools
performance on its environmental sustainability index and to implement these steps over
the coming years.

The Gobar Times Green Schools Network is a conglomeration of schools
implementing the Green Schools Programme and adopting sustainable environmental practices
in their schools. Joining the network means you get a monthly activity sheet [have a look at an activity
sheet] to engage your students in activities, which are essential learning tools of
environment education. The Green Schools can directly upload their collected data on our
website using the Data Reporting System and get a number of privileges- More...
