A Reservoir Story
The ruins of the Madag reservoir
in central Karnataka was built during the Vijaynagar empire.
Once, a local ruler wanted to marry the beautiful Kenchava,
daughter of the patil (headman) of Masur. But the patil
was of a higher caste than the local ruler, so Kenchava
refused.
Years later, her parents wanted her to marry the patil
of another village. The marriage procession set out. As
it passed a temple, Kenchava broke from her retinue and took
refuge in the temple. She devoted herself to the deity there.
When the reservoir was built, it completely submerged the
temple. Kenchava, who refused to leave the temple, drowned.
