  Background

Chettiyari lake in Ariyalur town (265 km south of Chennai) is under the threat of pollution. Once this lake acted as the source of drinking water to the town. Now this has been changed to a dumping place and also place for open defecation. The citizens are concerned about the state of the lake as this water body still acts as the source of water to the town in the lean period. The municipality has to depend on couple of collector wells in the lake at times of disruption to the drinking water supplied from the Coleroon river—the main source of water for the town. According to the local people the government departments planned for desilting and revival of the lake but that never materialized.
