To
All colleages of CSE and family members of Mr. Agarwal. I express my deep concerns. I am
very shocked. The demise of Mr. Agarwal is a great loss for developing countries like ours
in the present situations when WTO and USA are planning to use the Earth Summit 2002 for
their business purposes. He was a great fighter for the cause to save the country's
soveignerity. He first exposed role of the North regarding environment among the people of
our country. Environment concern people of India as well as developing countries will
always remember him for his role to fight against the expliotation by the North on The south in the name of improving environment.
DTE is a noble contribution from CSE under his leadership. I expect from all the colleages
of CSE to carry his views and approach and will improve DTEmore than his expectation.

Dear Sunita, and
all other friends at CSE,
When I saw this
today morning, a profound sense of loss hit me. The last time I met him was exactly a year
ago, when I went to his house and later I came to CSE and met you and some others,
Sunita.
If the news is
affecting many of us in this manner, I cannot imagine how much more the impact is for all
of you at CSE.
Here is what I
posted on our right-to-water list which sums what I feel, "The world had a lot
more to learn from Anilji. His death leaves a void that cannot be filled. His vision and
energy, we hope, will continue to inspire all of us. But he will be greatly missed. We at
the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy offer our condolences to Anil Agarwal's
family, friends and colleagues at Center for Science and Environment."
Wishing you
the strength to cope and move forward,
Shiney

Dear Friends,
The Director, Staff, Students of XIDAS learn with deep sorrow that Anil left us to go to
his heavenly reward on January 2, 2002.
The whole
environmental world in India and especially the poor whose interest he always had in mind,
feel orphaned by his untimely departure.
We consider him as
a 'secular' saint.
Please convey our
condolences to his widow and two daughters. We would appreciate if you could send a large
photo or picture, so that we can frame it and keep his memory alive.
Yours
sincerely,

It is a great shock
for me to hear of the untimely demise of Anil Agarwal as for years I have been reading his
editorials that have never failed to inspire me. His sincerity of purpose and zeal for
protection of environment was touching.
Through his writings I had developed that istinctive understanding that exists between a
writer and a reader. His articles and editorials were always full of sense and meaning and
for me represented a rare voice of reason and concern in this otherwise reckless and
selfish world.
His approach
towards environmental problems was a very pragmatic one and remarkable in that it involved
a right mix of tradition and technology. His death is a setback for environmental cause
but I hope that Down to Earth and CSE continues to carry on with its mission with
the same the zest. This, I think, would be a befitting tribute to Anil Agarwal.

Dear Mrs. Agarwal
and the Centre for Science and Environment:
I am shocked and anguished by the news of Mr. Anil Agarwal's passing away. While those familiar with Mr. Agarwal and his
writings were aware of his ill health, everyone had hope in the indefatigable Anil and his
untimely demise was a big shock. I first got acquainted with Mr. Agarwal when I began
reading "Down To Earth" (DTE) in 1992. A
few years back Mr. Agarwal became my editor by publishing a book review I'd written. Subsequently I wrote another piece for DTE and was
enjoying writing for Mr. Agarwal and the magazine. While
my relationship with him was limited to correspondence over e-mail, I read his pieces in
DTE regularly and ever thought of him as a person whom I'd never met.Mr. Agarwal,
in his writings, took positions that earned him many
detractors but even
the most vociferous of his critics never disputed his passion for India's environment. Mr. Agarwal was a true patriot and his work
to safeguard India's environment and thereby India's future will be always remembered. The Centre for Science and nvironment is Mr.
Agarwal's magnum opus and CSE, I am sure, will continue to further Mr. Agarwal's deep
passion and rich legacy.
I convey my deep
condolences to you, your family, and Mr. Agarwal's colleagues at CSE. I pray to God to give you peace and strength in
this hour of grief.
Mr. Agarwal,
I'm very sure, will rest in peace for a life well given to India and its future.
Warm regards,

My sincerest
condolences to the family members and the great team That has worked with him over the
years. To have continued to keep up with The dynamic role inspite of the ailment is
remarkable indeed. I just read His piece in the latest issue of Down to Earth yesterday!
The world has lost a voice
of conscience.

I am grieved to
learn of the passing away of Mr Anil Agarwal. Fiftyfour is no age to go and the country
expected a lot more to come from him. I had known him for nearly twenty years now
and had the privilege and pleasure of calling him a dear friend.
All of us will miss
him for a long time to come. The only way one could dream of paying a true homage to him
would be by re-dedicating ourselves to the cause of enviromental protection so dear to
Anil.
May God rest
his soul in eternal peace and give his family the strength, courage and fortitude to bear
the terrible loss.
Please pass
on the message to his family that their personal loss is shared by the countless friends
of Anil throughout the world.
