Condolence messages

was deeply saddened to read about Anil's demise.  His seven year battle against a deadly disease was of course known to many. But so firm was his fighting spirit and so great the need for his leadershio that one hoped for the best.  Alas that was not to be.

Anil's contribution in raising environmental awareness and scientific understanding and in fighting injustice in India and elsewhere is widely recognised. The clarity and strength of his articulation of the interests of poor countries and poor people in the various efforts at global treaty making was speciallly welcome.  He never minced words, never tailored his message to the audience and always spoke with such passion and lucidity that he commanded complete attention.

I for one will miss his counsel and support in the preparations for the Johannisberg Summit in September 2002. Please convey my sincerest condolences to everyone at CSE and to all of Anil's family.

My dear friends

We are all deeply distressed to hear the sad news about Anil. I personally have admired the manner in which, against all odds, Anil fought his valiant battle against cancer for the past several years, and how he managed to continue to fight his battles to save the environment and make the world a better place for all of us despite the evil sword hanging over his head.

May God bless his soul and give courage to his family and friends to carry on with the campaigns he had started. We will sorely miss his absence on the front line.

From all of us at BEAG, and from me personally, please do pass on our deepest condolences to his family, and to all the others at CSE.

The passing of Anil is a loss to all who care about justice. A quiet, but powerful man, he spoke what others did not want to hear on behalf of those whose voices were too often silenced. His memory will long be with us.

Dear CSE,
I am terribly saddened to hear of Anil's passing. Anil was one of the strongest advocates of greater global equity, justice and environmental well-being.   He was an inspiration to us all.  Even in the midst of his significant medical battles, he continued to work for a better world. His brightness, energy, sheer intelligence and conscious vigilance will be sorely missed.

There is little consolation upon the death of someone so important to the global environmental movement and so dear to many of us who knew him well.  I am going to try to use his passing as an opportunity to recommit myself to creating a more just, ecologically-sound world. My sense is that many will do so.

Please know that the hearts of many in the US and around the world go out to Anil's family, close friends and associates at CSE.  I'm sure CSE will continue to be a beacon of hope and activism in a world that is now a bit dimmer.

            My sympathies,
           Paul Wapner

I am writing this note to offer condolences to CSE and Anil's family. I knew Anil when I worked with him at the CSE for a short while during 1987. While he was a difficult person to work with, his energy and committment to environment and poverty issues charged me with the motivation to work on those subjects. I had maintained contact with him over the years and seen him in recent years at various global  environment conferences, bravely figthing his illness and still continuing to fight for the poor people on this planet.

Anil passing away will not deter the inspiration that he has instilled in several of us.

With best regards,

Ramesh.

I was deeply saddened to read about Anil's demise. One knew of course that he was battling a deadly disease  but his fighting spirit was such that one felt that he would prevail.  And he did for seven years. He contributed more to the cause of environment, sustainable development and social justice in his alas too short a life than many have done over much longer.

My deepest sympathies to the Centre and to all of Anil's family and Friends

Hello

I was absolutely shocked to hear this sad and bad news.  Its unbelievable.  I never knew that Dr Agarwal was suffering from cancer and asthma.  Please convey my heartfelt sympathies to his family.  May the departed soul rest in peace.  May God give the bereaved family the strength to bear this loss.

I have read so much of what he has written and practised, and was thoroughly impressed and awed by his work.  In fact, I envied hm for the laurels he won and the high standing he had. I wonder whether it will be the same from now on, both for the family and the Centre.

Yours in grief
Shankar

I just want to express my shock and sorrow at the death of Anil Agarwal. I have been reading the excellent Down to Earth and associated CSE publications for years, and continue to learn so much from them. It is with profound sadness that my colleagues and I at the Foundation's New York office send our condolences to Anil's family, to Sunita and to the CSE clan, over the loss of Anil.  He was a masterful global activist and an undeniable intellectual force for environment and development worldwide.  He combined a rigourous and scientific analytical capacity with passionate and outspoken advocacy for the earth, for the poor and dospossesed and for equity between all living things.   We have lost a great leader and colleague but can take strength from his energy which will continue to cycle through the work he has left us to carry forward.

Thanks Anil!

Dear Sunita and other friends at CSE

With great sorrow and a sense of shock I heard about the death of Anil Agarwal. I join you in your sorrow and pray that all of you may be able to continue the good work he began. It is a personal loss to me of a dear friend. He was a human being with his strengths and weaknesses. He could be very strong at times in what he said and did. But he had a sense of dedication to the cause. I have worked with him since 1982 and with all the problems that CSE has lived through, I have seen it growing and making an impact. I have experienced his dedication in many different ways. May his sense of dedication live in your work. Condolences again

Dear Friends,

We have just seen this sad mail. This comes as very sad news. It was inevitable but we all prayed that It would not happen so soon. He was a fine man of principles and a person Who fought for the health of so many people - the public - even when he was not well, and at the cost of his own health and well being.
We wish that there are more such people in this world - caring and Less selfish.I am reminded of a saying by Ralp Waldo Emerson - philosopher and writer who said " Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles".

Anil Agarwal seemed to follow this saying in real life. Horace Mann and educator said " Be ashamed to die until you have won Some victory for Humanity ".

Anil Agarwal was victorious in many ways. We will miss his presence. We pray that God gives strength to his family and near and dear ones to bear this loss.

Please accept and convey our condolences to his family. We will be very obliged to you for it
