School efforts

OIn December 5, 2000, the water harvesting structure constructed by the Sri Ram School in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi was inaugurated by Shiela Dixit, the chief minister of Delhi, at a function attended by teachers and principals from other schools, children and parents. The school is in an area where groundwater depletion is a severe problem.

The chief minister informed about the measures being taken by the Delhi government to harvest rain and urged the people to participate in their efforts. Speakers during the function included Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). While the speaker from CGWB informed about depleting groundwater levels, the speaker from CSE informed about how rainwater could be harvested at individual and community levels.

The plan for harvesting water in the school has been developed by CSE and involves recharging the groundwater. The rainwater harvesting potential of the school premises is 1.89 million litres annually.

An exhibition on environment related issues was also organised, where CSE’s urban water harvesting posters were displayed. A model of rooftop rainwater harvesting was prepared by the children. It was a treat to see the under-ten children spouting the virtues of rainwater harvesting and sound water management strategies.
