Ecocity’s effective strategy for water management

Waitakere, New Zealand's fifth largest city, has a unique concept of an ecocity that links economy and environment resulting in a clean and green city. The ecocity is more about the way of living. It is the process by which decisions are made and the values the residents hold.

The first ecocity has fully embraced the Agenda 21 charter of ideals laid down at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The city has an impressive water cycle strategy. The water systems includes effective management of water supply, wastewater (sewage) and storm water. The systems are needed to protect public health, environment, life and property and are essential for the community and industry.

Presently, the water supply in Waitakere is through water dams but for sustainable water supply, the residents are being encouraged to adopt alternative sources like groundwater, roofwater, water tanks and reusing and recycling water. Thus, the decentralised strategy being developed is simple, but extremely effective.
