MISSIONEnvironmental education is being recognised today as being a key factor in bringing about changes of attitudes and thinking in people to create a more socially just and ecologically sustainable society. Whether you are an educator or a parent, one needs to question whether education today
Environment education, for long, has been limited to a narrow focus on nature and wildlife, topics on which a vast amount of literature already exists. We feel that the "Green message" must, especially if addressed to the young (the future inheritors of this earth), be broadened in its scope to encompass issues that are more contentious and political. Issues that show up linkages between a degrading environment and poverty, and unsustainable development and inequity in society, to stimulate young minds to question prevailing development patterns, lifestyles, governance systems etc. The Environment Education Unit (EEU) at CSE was set up to specifically target school-going and college/university students, as well as interested educators and parents. It aims at producing quality resource material and programmes, such as the "Green Educators Network", that will have a multiplying effect in bringing about a more ecologically conscious way of thinking and living. We would like to provide children with a more holistic picture of environment. When environment is seen in isolation, it becomes a lame duck. The idea is to examine and interpret environment from a variety of perspectives - physical, geographical, biological, sociological, historical, aesthetic, ethical and spiritual.
