Looking for something to do to involve kids in their environment?  Or perhaps you want to improve your skills as an environment educator.  These and other options for engaging children with the environment are available, just check out the activities listed below.

Organize an Eco-Tour for your School

etour3.jpg (12873 bytes)The Ecotours focus on widening the perspective of students towards their city’s environment and sensitising them to the symbiotic relationship between a city, its inhabitants and the environment, its functions as an ecosystem, resource consumption and waste production i.e. it’s ecological footprint.

The purpose of these ecotours is that they will serve as models for schools to replicate on their own initiative in Delhi and in other cities in India.

We offer a choice of 4 educational ecotours in Delhi:

  1. The river Yamuna: The Yamuna is one of the many 'sacred' rivers of India. The city of Delhi depends on the Yamuna for its water needs, yet it is one of the most polluted, with Delhi’s pollution load virtually killing it.

A boat trip down the polluted Delhi stretch, to create awareness about the state of the river.
  2. Traditional water harvesting sites: Delhi has an ancient history. Very few are aware of the ingenious water harvesting structures it contains which were built over the centuries to ensure against drought and invasion.

The aim is to create awareness about the history of water use in the city, the conservation and revival of these structures, and to relate it to the existing water problems plaguing the city.
  3. The Delhi Ridge Forest: To understand the role of an urban forest, its flora and fauna and conservation.  Nature walks in the Ridge Forest.
  4. etour1.jpg (18119 bytes)

  5. Waste disposal and management: To get students to understand the enormous problem of waste disposal in a etour2.jpg (12628 bytes)metropolis, their role in waste generation and disposal. The ecotour entails visits to landfill sites and recycling plants, meetings with ragpickers and NGOs working on the issue of waste.

The tours consist of a half-day field trip for around 30-40 children. Experts from other NGOs and government institutions accompany the children and fact sheets and informative poster kits on each issue are distributed amongst the students. An audio-visual show on each issue is presented before each trip.

Each student gets an exciting activity kit, complete with Do-It-Yourself posters, stickers and lots of information.  If you arrange your school conveyance we will help you conduct the eco-tour for FREE!   If you are interested just contact either:

Environmental educators workshop

Have a two-day exhilarating experience. Participate in a Environment Education Workshop at CSE and then become a part of the EEU’s Green Educators Network. Keep yourself informed and updated on what’s happening in the area of environment education.

We organise two-day workshops on Environment Education for teachers primarily with the objective to reiterate the need to impart Environment Education for sustainable development by infusing it with the curriculum -- thus making it relevant.

Here is what some attendees have had to say:

Comments on the Workshops

Question: What were you expecting when you attended the workshop?

  • Responses:
To get new ideas, methods in EE and getting the correct perspective framed in mind.

  • Concrete ideas to implement in the school.

  • Interactive discussions on environmental issues.

  • A lecture type - talking down to!

  • To gain more knowledge, to collect information, to be able to carry out ecotour on our own in future.

  • I was curious about water-harvesting.

  • I was expecting it to be a boring 2 days with no practical solutions. BUT I WAS WRONG.

  • To solve the problems the earth is facing

  • Orientation and motivation on Environmental issues

  • A brain storming of people from similar background & CSE

  • To understand practicalities of EE in a school set-up

  • I expected to be enlightened about the environmental problems & then how to go about it with students

  • To get a general idea about teacher’s project

  • You were better than what I expected

Organise a lecture or presentation at your school

Audio-visual shows-cum-lectures are regularly organised in schools and colleges.  Our environmental professionals will give a presentation on the following topic:

Talking Environment

The key environment and development issues are discussed. The larger issue of water scarcity is addressed by introducing adults and children to water harvesting system that was being implemented in India even in ancient times. Other issues highlighted are the problems of protected areas and, water and air pollution. The objective is to disseminate information on these issues and involve students directly. The programme included talks by experts, film shows, poster exhibitions and sale of CSE publications at various schools and colleges of Delhi.

If you want to organize a slide show or presentation simply contact either:

Produce Gobar Times - Children's Workshop

The Environment Education Unit assists students to produce special editions of Gobar Times covering certain occasions. These special editions are entirely written and designed by children!  We hold a seminar with the students to assist them in aspects of design and production.  The objective is to

    Auto Cover
A sample cover from one of our special issues.
  • Create awareness among students as it helps them to learn about environment and development issues on the job
  • Undertake media studies: They learn about the role of investigative journalism, information as an activist tool, role of media/press in bringing about change in society
  • Impart vocational experience: editing and designing of the periodical.

So far we have produced the following special issues of Gobar Times that were entirely written by children:

  1. Special Auto Expo Issue - produced in January 2000 to correspond with the India Auto Expo held in New Delhi.
  2. Grow, Growing, Groaning - produced in April 200 and presenting the Children's Manifesto on Clean Air.

To make these a reality we need schools and youth to participate!  So if you are interested in working on such a special project we encourage you to give it a go!  Just contact our Environmental Education Unit by email or phone and let us know!  You can write to Rustam Vania (rustam@cseindia.org) and express your interest.
