In May 1992, the Society for Environmental Communications started
India's only science and environment fortnightly, Down To Earth
(DTE). Since then DTE has informed and inspired people about environmental
threats facing India and the world -- a dimension underplayed in
mainstream media. During the 1999-2000 drought, when the media was
crying about drought, DTE has given a new perspective to the entire
issue by highlighting the successful water harvesting initiatives.
It has also appreciated the rainwater initiatives of the villagers
from Bhaonta Koylala in harvesting rain through the coveted Joseph
C John award in April 2000. DTE editorials have always analysed
the policy matters related to water and rainwater harvesting.
