The
Eastern Highlands
The Eastern Plateau extends across
Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.
The uplands of Jharkhand also known as the Chotanagpur Plateau,
cover the districts of Palamau, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh,
Giridih, Santhal Parganas and Singhbhum, and extend into the
Purulia, Bankura, Mednipore, districts of West Bengal. The northern
uplands cover Rewa, Satna, Shahdol, and Sidhi districts of Madhya
Pradesh and Sarguja district of Chattisgarh. The Mahanadi basin
and the Dandakarnya forest region in the southern part of Chattisgarh
cover Bilaspur, Durg, Raigarh, Rajnandgaon, Raipur and Bastar
districts. The northern Orissa highlands comprise Dhenkanal,
Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur and Sundargarh districts.
Little is known about the water harvesting
systems of this region although there is evidence of a rich
tradition in the Chotanagpur Plateau. This plateau consists
of a series of tablelands at different elevations. Ranchi
plateau is the highest, with an elevation of 1,100 m. The
area east of it, the Hazaribagh plateau, extends up to Rajmahal
hills in the Santhal Parganas. The general slope of the region
is towards the north. The Koel river flows down the hills
and joins the Son near Rohtasgarh. The southern extension
of this broad plateau merges with the Singhbhum plateau, which
covers the entire Singhbhum district. This region slopes towards
the southeast.
