GOBAR TIMES
Q.
What is Gobar Times?
A. Gobar Times is the bi-monthly beginner's
supplement of Down To Earth. It is a colourful 8 page tabloid. Though primarily
targetted at students, of course even adults love reading GT as it not only provides a
fresh perspective and new ways of looking at environmental issues, but does so in an
engaging, attractive and humorous way. Teachers and interested parents find it useful as a
teaching aid. This 'survival guide' helps readers to read between the lines of complex
environment and development issues. It publishes news and views on science
and technology, traditional environmental movements and inventions, features highlighting
the social and environmental implications of science and technology, and various
activities and competitions for kids to take part in.
Q. Why Gobar Times when it could have so easily been given a more
sophisticated name?
A. The numerous uses of gobar or cowdung in India embodies certain
environmental principles - how to use our resources in a sustainable and optimum manner.
How to make wealth from waste. Most urbanites, especially children, treat gobar with
amusement or disgust. It is a good entry point into various environmental issues and
debates. Attitudes, sustainability, recycling, renewable energy, rural-urban divide etc.
Whats in a name? A lot as you can see.
Q. How do I subscribe to Gobar Times?
A. To get Gobar Times at home regularly, you
need to subscribe to Down To Earth.
CSE's ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION UNIT
Q. Whats
so different about this environment education unit?
A. Environment
education has, for long, has been limited to a narrow focus on nature and wildlife, topics
on which a vast amount of literature already exists. We feel that the Green
message must, especially if addressed to the young, be broadened in its scope to
encompass issues that are more contentious and political. Issues that show up linkages
between a degrading environment and poverty, and unsustainable development and inequity in
society, to stimulate young minds to question prevailing development patterns, lifestyles,
governance systems etc.
Through our environment education unit, we would like to provide children with a more
holistic picture of environment. When environment is seen in isolation, it becomes a lame
duck. The idea is to examine and interpret environment from a variety of perspectives -
physical, geographical, biological, sociological, historical, aesthetic, ethical and
spiritual, and try integrate it with curricular subjects.
ECOTOURS AND OTHER PROGRAMMES
Q. How
do I go on an ecotour?
A. If you are a
teacher/principal/headmistress interested in organising an ecotour for your students in
Delhi, just contact us. We can discuss suitable dates and go ahead.
If you want to organise one for people working in your organisation, living in your
residential colony or society, etc., you can also contact us similarly.
If you are an individual, you would need to form a group of at least 10 and then contact
us.
Q. Who are ecotours for?
A. For anyone!
Q. What about workshops, presentations and lecture
programmes?
A. The same steps as for ecotours...
Q. And how much do we have to pay?
A. We do not charge anything for the resource
persons. You would need to pay for the transport in case of eco-tours or have transport
facility of your own. |
